How do brands use AR these days?

For these last centuries, technology has been taking giant steps in the AR industry, so much so that it is already normal that many companies have started to use this technology to have a better coexistence with their clients. But, foremost, we want to teach you what AR technology is.

What is AR technology?

Augmented Reality is a wonderful technology and user experience. It provides a real-world environment where computer-generated perceptual information is used to enhance its elements. This can be done through various sensory modalities such as sight and hearing. This technology provides a great experience for real-time interaction, accurate 3D response, combining reality and virtual world.

Do not confuse Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. The difference exists in the way the material is processed. Virtual reality requires the usage of special glasses to allow users to immerse themselves in virtual surroundings. Although augmented reality may be viewed through glasses, it does not give a sense of immersion because all you see are superimposed pictures of a real-world scene.

The first head-mounted display system was built by Ivan Sutherland in 1968, and this was the start of AR. Following that, the Air Force used it to create virtual fixtures, and NASA used it to improve visual navigation testing. Tom Caudell, a Boeing researcher, invented the phrase "augmented reality" in 1990. AR and the internet eventually came together in the early 2000s, but interest in the technology didn't really take off until 2009, thanks to the smartphone revolution. Because of the increase in smart wear technologies, augmented reality has lately seen a second revival.

The implementation of AR in business

Apart from the ‘traditional' application of this technology in gaming, a slew of new opportunities and benefits have emerged in areas such as logistics, manufacturing, retail, and much more. AR may help any process or business activity that can benefit from a visual overlay. These are some examples of businesses using AR technology:

Retail

Retail is one industry that is using AR technology to improve the consumer experience. Ikea has launched virtual furniture, which allows consumers to see Ikea items in their own kitchens and living rooms before making a purchase.

Aviation

AR's potential is being embraced by businesses. Boeing, for example, conducted an experiment in which a group of factory trainees assembled an airplane wing using AR instructions. The results indicated a 30% time reduction and a 90% increase in accuracy.

Similarly, DHL is testing AR-enabled smart glasses in one of its warehouses to boost efficiency by 25% and is currently looking at a wider deployment.

Conclusion

Augmented Reality is a technology that superimposes digital information in the real world. AR has been around for centuries, but it’s only recently that we’ve had the ability to use it in such a widespread way. And brands are taking notice.

With AR, companies can create an interactive experience with their customers like never before. From product demonstrations to experiential marketing, there are endless possibilities for how brands can use AR to engage and delight their customers.
